The famed actor-turned-performance-artist runs 144 laps around a Dutch museum.

What would you do if you witnessed Shia LaBeouf running laps around a building in purple spandex with a baton in one hand? You would either gawk at his seriously purple tights or join him as several people did last Thursday at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The run was part of LaBeouf’s artistic endeavor, the “#Metamarathon”, which he advertised on his Twitter @thecampaignbook the Monday before his performance. LaBeouf ran 144 times around the museum while a 12-hour art conference took place inside.

“As we are having a ‘marathon’ conference inside the Stedelijk, we also wanted a reflection of that outside,” explains museum public curator Hendrik Folkerts in a story by The Independent, a UK news source. “Nobody can do it better than Shia and the other artists at this performance.”

According to a recent post by @thecampaignbook, LaBeouf ran 26.87 miles during his metamarathon, using the Nike+ running app. However, he did not run all of it alone as this video shows ordinary bystanders latching onto LaBeouf’s baton and literally running side-by-side with the actor (which we’ll admit is a bit awkward).

Who knew running could be considered art? And who knows when you’ll get a chance to run with a celebrity as part of their “performance” again?
