Friday Fail: Mike Piazza’s Ambitious Attempt at Trail Running

What is former MLB catcher and 12-time All-Star Mike Piazza up to these days? He’s trail running (or attempting to) in the new Philips Norelco Shaver Series 9000 commercial.

We’re thrilled to see trail running portrayed in a commercial for a non-running product, and overall the commercial is done quite nicely, comparing hard-to-reach shaving spots on your face to rugged running terrain. And props to the 46-year-old former slugger, who looks pretty fit seven years after retiring.

However, our trail running experts here have pointed out a few not-so-authentic moments in the commercial.

For example:

At 0:10 seconds we see Mike Piazza waiting and then taking off on a run as if a start gun had gone off. Why is he stalling? It’s clear he’s not in a race, so there’s really no need for the start-line dramatics.

Slow-mo fluffy hair bouncing at 0:19. Let’s face it, nobody’s hair looks that good on the trail (unless you have Anton Krupicka’s or Tim Olson’s luscious long locks). There’s serious hair mousse involved here.

An ASICS road running shoe at 0:32. At least get the shoe type correct. How is Piazza supposed to conquer the trail in road shoes?

Crawling on all fours on near-horizontal terrain at 1:06. OK, maybe Piazza’s balance isn’t that great, but that’s because he’s wearing road shoes. Get the man a pair of proper trail shoes so he doesn’t slip on a rock and ruin his handsomely shaven face!

Good effort Piazza, but you still need a little work before you look as natural on the trails as you did on the baseball field.
